Stanningley history on show at church heritage open day

The rich history of a Stanningley church will be celebrated at a special Heritage Open Day event next weekend (Saturday, 10 September 2022).

People will be able to come into St Thomas’ Church between 10am and 4pm and see some of Stanningley’s history.

On show will be clergy vestments and what they mean, the marriage register when Leeds United legend Norman (‘bite yer legs’) Hunter got married along with photos and many other industrial history of the Stanningley area.

The event is being held jointly by the church with the newly formed Friends of St Thomas group.

Heritage Open Days are a national festival of history and culture, involving thousands of volunteers and organisations.

Every year in September it brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life. It’s a chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free.

Check out the Heritage Open Days website to find out more local events. WLD will be producing a full guide of all West Leeds events shortly.
